The Primordials

2021 - ... (Work in progress)

Religions are an integral part of our human societies. Whether one is an atheist or a believer, the symbolic values inherited from spiritualities build our way of life in an insidious and lasting way.

However, in almost all religions, founding myths and cults, sacred feminine entities do not occupy priority places. Even if there are female officiants, priestly power is the business of men. Even more disconcerting is the presumed impurity of women, whether in monotheisms or in philosophies like Buddhism.
How did this massive spiritual denigration come about ? Are there, or have there been, female entities venerated at the highest spiritual level ?

To deconstruct this spiritual indignity of the feminine, I have started investigating on primordial deities. And more particularly on those which are at the base of our Western culture. Between archaeological documentary and contemplative abstraction, I show the forgotten sanctuaries of archaic goddesses. Based on the work of mythologists and historians, I have traced the identity of these deities and the socio-religious context that deviated their influence on people. The caption that accompanies each photograph of sanctuaries takes on the full meaning of the word. It is both instructive and a source of imagination that reincarnates these forgotten sanctuaries.
Through seven deities and spiritual concepts, The Primordials will reveal analogies of a generic character of the sacred feminine.
